Millbrook Instruments Limited was founded in 1995 with the objective of providing industry and universities with an innovative instrument capable of performing chemical analysis on solid surfaces to a high degree of sensitivity and precision at a significant cost advantage to existing systems. A technology known as Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) was chosen to fulfil the performance criteria; traditionally this technology had generally been employed in large room sized instruments costing of the order of £1 million. The objective was therefore to miniaturise and simplify the instrumentation in order to bring SIMS to a wider market. The Millbrook MiniSIMS was the result. A desktop instrument costing a fraction of a traditional SIMS but providing similar information, it was also designed to be robust, easy to use and maintain, and fast in operation.
