Spirent Participates in Isocore Multi-Vendor MPLS Testing Event

Spirent Solutions Used to Demonstrate Interoperability of NextGen Multicast VPNs, MPLS-TP, SDN and IPv6 Transition Techniques

Sunnyvale, Calif. – (November 13, 2012) — Spirent Communications, a leader in network testing, services and devices, today announced that Isocore, an independent technology validation, certification and product evaluation lab, used Spirent solutions for Leading Edge Code testing involving key features such as MPLS-TP, Multicast-VPN (mVPN), Software Defined Networking (SDN) and IPv6. This public test, conducted at Isocore’s lab in Washington D.C., showcased the readiness of MPLS and SDN technologies to support carrier transport and core networks.

“Working with test partners such as Spirent on public interoperability tests, we are helping to demonstrate how carrier and equipment vendors accelerate the pace of MPLS-TP & SDN rollouts while reducing costly post-deployment failures,” said Dr. Bijan Jabbari, president of Isocore.

Isocore leveraged Spirent TestCenter to test a comprehensive suite of Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) mechanisms including MPLS-TP linear protection and sub-50 millisecond failure switchover. Spirent TestCenter was also used to test SDNs implementing Open Flow 1.0 and IPv6 migration solutions such as with Dual-Stack Lite (DS Lite) and IPv6 Provider Edge Routers (6PE).

“New technologies don’t work in a vacuum. One of the most crucial tests for SDN and MPLS-TP is the interoperability of vendor equipment with the widely deployed IP/MPLS networks,” said Rajesh Rajamani, senior product marketing manager at Spirent Communications. “Spirent has been a leader in MPLS-TP testing and offers a broader range of network topology emulation capabilities that help vendors bring products to market faster with fewer post deployment issues.”

Market conditions and outlook

The fundamental drivers for the test and measurement market remain strong, although the global macro-economic environment is uncertain. The underlying revenues in the fourth quarter of 2012 are expected to be similar to last year and with the addition of revenues from acquisitions could show some growth overall.

Bill Burns, Chief Executive Officer, commented:
“We have made good strategic progress in the third quarter executing on the acquisition of Metrico Wireless and disposing of the non-core Systems Division, allowing us to focus the Group’s activities exclusively on the faster growing test and measurement market. As a result, we intend to increase investment in the technologies that will serve our customers’ evolving needs while at the same time pursuing initiatives to expand our served markets.”

Third quarter performance
Overview

Revenue for the third quarter of 2012 for the continuing Group was 3 per cent lower compared with 2011, as a result of flat revenues in Performance Analysis and the continued decline in demand in Service Assurance for its legacy products. Adjusted operating profit was down by 4 per cent compared with the third quarter of 2011 on lower revenue. Adjusted earnings per share grew by 2 per cent to 3.11 cents.

Performance Analysis

Revenues were steady at $103.8 million (Q3 2011: $104.0 million) and operating profit was down by 6 per cent to $27.7 million (Q3 2011: $29.5 million). The book to bill ratio was 93 compared with 105 for the third quarter of 2011. Demand for our wireless test solutions continued to grow, however, this was offset by weakness in demand for wireline infrastructure equipment and by further delays in the procurement of positioning test solutions. We experienced weakness in Europe and from the US government coupled with a marked slowdown in growth in China.

Service Assurance

Revenue fell by 31 per cent compared with the third quarter of 2011 and operating profit was up by $0.4 million, reflecting the cost reductions made during the first half of 2012 in response to the rapid fall in Service Assurance’s legacy business. We expect this division to operate at similar levels in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Discontinued operations – Systems

The Systems Division has been classified as a discontinued operation. The sale for $64.0 million to Curtiss-Wright Corporation was completed after the end of the quarter on 1 November 2012. The result for Systems after tax was $0.6 million for the third quarter (Q3 2011: $1.9 million); this is after charging costs of $1.0 million in relation to the divestment.

The net proceeds from the sale after tax and expenses are expected to be approximately $61 million and it is envisaged that they will be returned to Spirent’s shareholders by way of on market share buybacks.

Acquisitions

Metrico Wireless, Inc. (“Metrico”) was acquired in September for $52.0 million. Metrico is included within the Performance Analysis division. The acquisition brings together Spirent's strength in the lab with Metrico's focus on subscriber-level device testing in the field, resulting in a unique end-to-end test portfolio. This timely offering enables Spirent to address the needs of service providers and device manufacturers who must contend with disruptive technologies including 4G data, voice over LTE and the cloud. It enables service providers and their suppliers to minimise time to market, improve subscriber satisfaction and loyalty, and reduce device return rates.

Revenue from Metrico was $1.6 million in the third quarter and it made a positive contribution to profit in the period from the 13 September 2012 closing date.

Acquired intangible asset amortisation for Metrico is expected to be in the region of $5 million per annum.

Cash

Free cash generation was $17.1 million in the third quarter (Q3 2011: $25.8 million). Year to date free cash flow was $67.5 million compared with $42.9 million in 2011. Cash and cash equivalents closed at $191.7 million (1 July 2012: $234.7 million). The cash position reflects the payment of the interim dividend for 2012 of $9.4 million and the acquisition of Metrico Wireless for $52.0 million.

Spirent Enables MSOs to Validate Mobile Network Offload and Massive Scale Wi-Fi Networks

Spirent’s Wi-Fi Offload Gateway Testing Solution Offers Realistic Testing of Capacity, Scale and Performance to Enable MSOs to Deliver Consistent End User Service

Orlando – October 17, 2012 —
Spirent Communications today announced the availability of its Spirent Landslide Wi-Fi Offload Gateway Testing solution for Multi-System Operators (MSOs). Spirent Landslide is the industry’s first solution to test the performance of Wi-Fi Offload Gateways. These Gateways handle offloading of data from sources such as mobile video, as well as traditional services such as voice calling and SMS, from a 3G/4G/LTE network to Wi-Fi for transport over cable networks. Spirent is showcasing the solution at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo® being held at the Orange County Convention Center, Oct. 17-19, 2012, in Orlando, FL.

In order to maximize the revenue surge from mobile data traffic and the smartphone/tablet revolution, MSOs need to maintain a consistent quality of experience level for end users, with the Wi-Fi Offload Gateway seamlessly delivering service handoff from the mobile network. Insuring this requires testing that can aid in the design and building of Wi-Fi offload systems. With its support of over 30,000 Wi-Fi access points and data from millions of subscribers over them, Spirent Landslide is able to identify capacity limits and verify application performance while under mobility scenarios such as hand-offs. All testing is done replicating real conditions with user behaviors, converged traffic, and network conditions that are all pushed to fully explore the behavior of the system under stress.

Spirent Landslide Wi-Fi Offload Gateway Testing solution was also recently recognized by BTR Diamond Technology Reviews for filling a need in the market, with technical features and performance that provide clear and substantial benefits for cable operators. The solution was rated four out of five diamonds by an independent panel of judges from companies such as Buckeye Cable Systems, Bright House, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Rogers Cable Communications Suddenlink, Sunflower Broadband and Time Warner Cable.

“The testing of Wi-Fi offloading services that can serve the needs of millions of consumer and business users requires a robust platform,” said Ross Cassan, director of product marketing, service provider solutions at Spirent. “Spirent has been supporting MSOs directly and through support of CableLabs as they built out their DOCSIS broadband networks. Now we are combining this experience with our leadership in mobile networking to help MSOs extend their networks’ capability to support the increasing data demands of users.”

Huawei Selects Spirent to Validate Performance and Scale of Latest Data Center Solution

Spirent TestCenter, Spirent iTest used to validate384 ports of 10G Ethernet, demonstrating high-scale, high-reliability data center performance and support for TRILL

Beijing – October 15, 2012 – Spirent Communications, the leader in testing networks, services and devices, today announced that Huawei selected Spirent TestCenter to verify the performance of the newly launched CloudEngine 12800 series data center switches. This test of 384 ports of 10G Ethernet was conducted at massive scale under the most stressful yet realistic conditions, representing China’s first highest port density and TRILL and test.

Huawei launched the CloudEngine data center switches earlier this year with 48 Tbps of single-frame switching capacity and support for high-density switching of 1/10/40/100 G Ethernet interfaces as well as virtualization and computing, storage and network convergence. Huawei used Spirent solutions to test its data center switches’ capability to offer stable, reliable and secure services to help customers build scalable, virtualized and converged data center fabric architectures.

Huawei used Spirent TestCenter to conduct high-performance testing of its CloudEngine 12808 to determine that it delivered on key performance metrics. The test used full mesh traffic across 384 ports of 10G Ethernet to showcase the CE12808 switch’s zero packet loss at line rate forwarding, and support for TRILL. Huawei also leveraged Spirent TestCenter and Spirent iTest for a green test to highlight low power consumption of the CE12808 switch. The results allow Huawei to confidently address the scalability, performance and latency needs of increasingly large data centers and cloud-based services.

“Spirent enabled Huawei to go beyond just functional testing to showcase the performance of data center fabrics at massive scale,” said Gene Zhang, vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific at Spirent Communications. “Spirent has long been the leader of test methodologies that validate data center and cloud computing performance at scale and with enhanced realism.”

Spirent’s test solutions play a key role in helping the data networking industry to address the performance and scale challenges facing data center operators. This test is just another example of why the industry continues to turn to Spirent for the most advanced and complete end to end cloud, virtualization and data center testing.

Spirent and ETS-Lindgren Collaborate to Advance A-GPS Performance for LTE Smartphones

First Commercial Solution for LTE A-GPS OTA Testing Compliant with CTIA’s 3.2 OTA Test Plan

Sunnyvale, Calif.– October 2, 2012 — Spirent Communications, a leader in testing wireless networks, services and devices, today announced immediate availability of the first commercialized test solution for LTE assisted GPS (A-GPS) Over-The Air (OTA) Testing. This solution was co-developed by Spirent and ETS-Lindgren, two industry leaders in location testing. This collaborative work is aligned with the upcoming version 3.2 of the CTIA Test Plan for Mobile Station Over the Air Performance and will prepare the industry for what will soon be a test requirement for LTE-enabled phones launched in North America.

With LTE now a standard capability on most new smartphones coming to market in North America, it becomes essential to test the A-GPS functionality in these devices over an LTE data connection. A-GPS remains the most widely used positioning technology on mobile devices, and is a critical element in establishing compliance with FCC E911 Phase II performance standards. With the introduction of LTE, new positioning protocols such as SUPL 2.0 and LPP are required to enable A-GPS position fixes. This leads to important differences in OTA testing of A-GPS for LTE when compared with the GSM, CDMA and WCDMA A-GPS testing in v3.1 of the CTIA test plan.

“As industry leaders in LTE testing and major contributors to the CTIA LTE A-GPS standard, we are thrilled to extend our collaborative partnership with ETS-Lindgren,” said Spirent vice pesident Hesham ElHamahmy. “Providing the first test solution compliant with CTIA v3.2 enables the industry to ensure the successful deployment of A-GPS devices on LTE networks.”

“The performance of GPS antennas is one of the biggest contributors to overall positioning accuracy on mobile devices,” said Bryan Sayler, senior vice president, Test Solutions, ETS-Lindgren. “Our long-standing partnership with Spirent now brings an LTE A-GPS OTA test solution to the industry, giving the design engineer a complete picture of real-world device performance.”

LTE A-GPS OTA testing is an upgrade option for Spirent’s market-leading test solution for A-GPS, and it builds on prior collaboration between ETS-Lindgren and Spirent for GSM, CDMA, and WCDMA A-GPS OTA testing. Existing users of ETS-Lindgren anechoic chamber solutions for OTA testing can easily upgrade to add this new LTE capability.
